Well, after surveying another week everything seems to have gone well, except I'm going to have to motivate my companion and myself. It seems he won't get up at 6am and for that matter neither will I. I guess the thing that brought the change of attitude was a comparative report. We were down on the bottom for the whole district (and I just wouldn't take that lying down) Knowing that I'm just as responsible as my companion for not getting enough hours. Besides, I'm only cheating myself nd the people of Lugano of the wonderful opportunity to hear the message of the Gospel. I'm acting as Bishop this week so I'm going to see if I can lead my senior companion to get a few more hours. I have also got to start leaning the language. I've been studying but not as hard as I should. I guess I'm going to have to spend more time on the "great white throne" 

Today I met the other member of the church here in Lugano. His name is Br. Almann. He really understands the scriptures. He can also speak 3 languages. He will make a fine Branch President when we can get a few members.

May 24th, 1963

  Date: 5-24-63 Interesting Experience- called the mission home yesterday to have Elder McCune bring the other pair of pants to my suit, that I bought from him, down to the missionary conference. I said, “Is Elder McCune there?” the mission president, Russon, answered and said “no”. Then asked me a question in German. It really startled me. I was caught speechless for a minute not knowing whether to answer of not; and if so, should I try in German? He repeated the question in German. This time I understood. “Wer ist diese? Or “who is this?” I answered in English. I finally got the message across \but it really brought the realism of how little German I do know. I imagine we will hear something today in conference about making English off limits. Yesterday, we also went out to do a little “Umfraging” or surveying. I didn’t even know the questions.
